Hog Roast & BBQ, South African Style

The BBQ and Hog Roast with a Difference!

The name Big 5 Catering comes from our South African roots. Big 5 is an old hunting term used to describe the five most dangerous animals to hunt in southern Africa (Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Rhino and Buffalo). They are now the most commonly sought after animals when on safari trips.

The name Big 5 also envokes memories of warm evenings spent around the BBQ (or Braai as we call it in South Africa) with family and friends, roasting our meat to perfection.

We don’t always have the weather in the UK to be outside and sitting around a BBQ, but at Big 5 Catering, Chester (Cheshire), we will endeavour to make your hog roast, lamb on the spit or BBQ a memorable and happy occasion.

Take a look at our South African BBQ menus for an idea of what you can get, but remember, we can build a menu based on your preferred taste. The options are flexible and if there is a food item you want served at your event, then tell us and we will tailor the menu to your needs.

Authentic South African Flavours

By incorporating the flavours used in our South African BBQ marinades, salads and meats, we aim to bring a taste of Africa to your event.
Alternatively, you can simply enjoy a straightforward Hog Roast or Lamb on the Spit, traditionally roasted and served with homemade apple sauce and stuffing (Hog Roast), or with mint sauce and/or a handmade aioli (Lamb on Spit).

Our Background

Quality Cuisine & Impeccable Service

Big 5 Catering is founded by South African chef, Darren Andrews, who has almost two decades of experience in hospitality, from front house services to catering on both a small and large scale.

Darren lives in Chester, Cheshire, and he has a passion to provide excellent service and food to your event.

Hog roasting is becoming more and more popular, as is lamb on a spit. Not only is the meat cooked to perfection over a long period, but the spit roasting process itself is also a form of culinary theatre for any party.

Darren has taken his hog roasting business one step further by introducing BBQ but with an African style. By incorporating the flavours used in South African meat marinades with well known South African BBQ meats, Darren is able to bring a taste of Africa to your event. We take our catering services very seriously and spend quality time trying out new things so we can offer our customers something that’s a little different. BBQ catering is in our blood and we are Cheshire’s premier BBQ caterers. Remember, just because someone owns a BBQ, doesn’t mean they know how to BBQ!!. There are a number of different cooking styles on a BBQ and it’s important to know which style to adopt, get the timings right and ultimately serve food that is perfectly cooked and packed with flavour.

Our passion for tasty food also extends to the salads, desserts and traditional non-BBQ dishes that South Africans enjoy on a daily basis.
